Washington Wizards – DC’s NBA Team

The Washington Wizards have come a long way since their inception as a basketball club known as the Chicago Packers way back in 1961. They’ve changed names and venues so often in their history that it can get a little confusing. Along the way, they have had great players and legendary rivalries with teams like the 76ers, and others.

In 1995 the team’s owner (Abe Pollin) changed the name to the Washington “Wizards” because the name Bullets was being associated with gun violence, and he no longer wanted that negative association to his beloved team.

Today, the  team flourishes as one of the top-tier NBA basketball franchises, and DC residents are proud to have the “Wiz” represent Washington in professional basketball.
